An Accelerator is a person or thing that causes something to happen or develop more quickly.
Every organization has an area that requires acceleration, and associations are no different.
Associations have five forces requiring them to accelerate their progress: a more global economy, industry consolidation, changing demographic patterns, technology and the increasing role of government.
Elon Musk said something about technology that applies to all five of these forces: “People often mistake technology for a static picture. It’s less like a picture and more like a movie. It’s the velocity of technology innovation that matters. It’s the acceleration.”
Most of the time, an accelerator is external to the organization. Scientists have long known that an accelerant can activate or increase the speed and reaction time of a process—accelerators are people who make things happen faster.
Accelerators are necessary and part of the formula of every successful organization. Today, there are startup accelerators; SXSW has an Accelerator Pitch Event; the Disney Accelerator is described as “helping today’s tech innovators turn their dreams for new media and entertainment experiences into reality”; and Tech Crunch has a list of the best 15 accelerators in the U.S. There is even a Japanese superhero called Accelerator.
Associations have long been environments of stasis operating in a state of stable equilibrium—conflicting interests and differing priorities of members, regulations positively impacting one sector of the industry and detrimental to another. Varying levels of effectiveness in professional development lead to average education that is good for the middle but not all of the membership. And trade shows are homogenous business-to-business shopping malls suffering the same fate as retail shopping malls: increasingly less convenient, less relevant, less experiential and not worth the time to get there and shop.
Today’s associations need an Accelerator, an external force that activates, inspires change and allows the organization and the industry to see opportunities in a new way through a new lens and to take new action to accelerate success. Reach more members, become more relevant, modernize the association’s reputation and increase revenue to fund advocacy, research and new value propositions for members.
