Change Is Inevitable ... Improvement Is Optional

Change Is Inevitable … Improvement Is Optional

Like many of the quotes that catch my attention, I saw “Change Is Inevitable … Improvement Is Optional” outside of a church that I was driving past. And it got me thinking.

One truth I have come to know and accept is that change is not only inevitable but that EVERYTHING changes. Seasons, relationships, temperature, minds, bodies, governments, currencies, plans … everything. Change occurs from within us and from within the conditions and environment of the world in which we live.

The real questions are: When will the change happen? Why will it happen? How will it happen? Some change is predictable, but most is not. We know that summer changes to fall, that day changes to night, and that the ocean’s tides ebb then flow – predictable change.

With our limited time on earth, the question becomes How am I and how are we improving, both influencing change and adapting to it? Resilience is the quality that allows us to enter each new day with the optimism, confidence and energy to adapt to, influence and embrace the change that is inevitable.

Fearing change is natural for most of us. Yet what most of us are truly fearful of is the lack of security, stability, and control that we anticipate change will bring. But the alternative to change, or “sameness,” reminds me of the great quote by General Eric Shinseki: “If you don’t like change, you’ll like irrelevance even less.”

Try not to think about change too much and instead think about what improvements you can effect today under the conditions and the always-shifting sands of your life. If we focus on making things better, not on what’s different, then we become the dance, not the dancer.
