Are your retreats memorable?

Twice a year the entire 360 team takes two days to go off the grid to meet as a team for a company retreat.

 

The retreat has taken many names with different themes but there’s one constant… we walk away more unified, energized and driven by purpose and clarity. Our retreats tend to be the most memorable experience for the team.

 

What happens at our retreats that make them so memorable?

 

  1. Team Bonding. We spend most of our days at work so it’s important to not only get along with the people you work with but truly enjoy their company. Gallup’s research found that people with a best friend at work are seven times more likely to engage fully in their work. As you’d suspect, many respondents stumbled over the word “best” but the concept of having friends at work is not foreign to anyone. However, what we often overlook is the company’s ability to create the environment to nurture those friendships. Retreats are excellent ways to help build connections,establish bonds and enhance friendships. At the end of every retreat, we do a lightning round (which probably doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone reading this) and without fail we hear how much people enjoyed the time to bond with each other.   1. Strategic Planning. Our retreats happen twice a year – once at the beginning of the year and again halfway through the year. The timing is crucial. We meet in January and spend at least 40% of the time focusing on the company priorities for the year. The leadership team develops the company priorities in advance and presents them to the team at the retreat. Then the team collaboratively develops the plan for how we will achieve our priorities. This gives everyone the opportunity to provide input and become accountable for the company’s success. The second retreat is a level set to ensure we are on track, and if not, course correct.

 

  1. Creative Thinking. Simply getting out of your typical environment and daily routine can spark creative thinking. This is one of the reasons why we host our retreats offsite in an interesting location. We engineer exercises that inspire the team to think outside the box. Have you ever built your ideal organization with pipe cleaners, sticky dots, popsicle sticks and foam blocks? Give it a try – it’s a great way to reflect, think outside the box and have fun.

 

  1. Fun Activities and Games. It’s so important not to overlook the value of having fun. We build in time for the team to relax and do whatever they want, except work! Everything we do is an experience, especially the activities and games at our retreat. A couple years back, we made our own version of Cards Against Humanity, 360 Style. Is your mind immediately thinking, How awkward was that? Completely but well worth the belly rolling laughter. Cards Against Humanity, 360 Style has made its way to a few retreats now and continues to generate funny memories throughout the year.
