Why a Memorial Day?

Why do we memorialize something—an idea, an accomplishment, a person, a day? What is worthy of being memorialized? Who decides? What are the criteria?

We memorialize that which we want to remember. And, as a nation, we must always remember those that have given their lives in service of our nation, our freedom, our security, and our way of life.

Memorial Day, once called Decoration Day, is a time to honor those American soldiers that gave their lives, their last measure of devotion to preserve what we stand for as a nation. This is different from Veterans Day, which is dedicated to all who served our country.

In a twist on the last line of our National Anthem, it is the courage of the brave that ensures the land of the free.

On this day, as every day, I am proud to be an American. And today, I honor and remember those who served our country and died for all of us.

As you celebrate this day, remember it not as just a day off from work or the beginning of summer, but for what it is—a national day of remembrance.

I am reminded of Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the U.S.A.” from years ago. His words are as true today, as they have ever been.
