How to get things back on track

No matter what you do, life finds a way of messing with you eventually.

Sometimes it’s a little thing that chips away at your confidence.

Like when a friend doesn’t respond to your email for three days.

Other times it’s a more serious event—like the passing of a loved one—that rocks you to your core.

I’ve found that the first step in moving forward is to recognize when I’m off track in the first place.

Then, I can see more clearly and decide what I need to do next.

What “off track” feels like to me

Foggy.

Trapped.

Isolated.

Unheard.

Unable.

Angry.

Indecisive.

What “on track” feels like to me

Accepted.

Playful.

Open.

Loved.

Curious.

Appreciated.

Unstoppable.

How to get things back on track

When I find myself off track, I have trouble recognizing the path forward—I feel stuck and unsure of what to do about it.

To help get things back on track, here’s what I do (and I hope these ideas help you, too):

1. I write down how I am feeling. Just like I did above.

2. I identify the reasons I feel that way.

3. I consider how I’d like to feel instead.

4. I determine what action I need to take to improve my situation for the long-term

5. I decide if the short-term pain of taking action is worth the long-term gain in how I will feel.

After this exercise, I find that I usually knew what I needed to do all along. Only now, I have the clarity to act on it.
